A YEAR'S SHIPPING; In the course ol his report for the year ended September 30 last tne harbourmaster at Wellington (Captain Dawson) wroto as follows:— "The arrivals at the port for the twelve months just ciKlt'l show a decrease from tho previous year, but considering the number of ships Uiat were .required for the use of the Allies in the Atlantic and those that have been lost by enemy action, tho trade of the port has been well maintained. The following are the arrivals for Uio year:— '

"From the United Kingdom direct, 4 steamers with a net tonnage of 21,165; via Nc)v. Zealand coastal pons, 24 steamers with a, net tonnage of 143,930. From intercolonial direct, 127 steamers with a not tonnago of 339,044, and' 5 sailimr vessels with a not tonnage of 1455; via New Zealand coastal ports, 39 steamers with a net tonnage of 136,187. From New Zealand coastal ports. iW steamers with a, net ionnaga of 1.440,466, and 52 sailim; vesels with a net tonnage of 4043. From Uritish Sossessions (other than Australian colonics) irect, 12 steamers-with a net tonnage of 35,497; via New Zealand coastal ports. 0 steamers with a net tonnage of 20,723. From foreign ports direct, 27 steamers with a net lonaagc of 64,752, and 11 sailing vessels with a net tonnage of 10;721; via New Zealand coastal ports, 11 steamers i,with a net tonnage of 42,445. and 2 tailing vcssols with a net tonnago of 3343. The total arrival of steamers was 2772 with a net tonnage of 2,312,209.; sailing vessels 70. with a net'tonnage of 191562; and a total of all classes of vessels 2842, with a net tonnage of 2.331,771.

"Transports, Admiralty vessels, etc., not ' included in the above (being free vessels) from the "United Kingdom direct. 2 steamers with a net tonnage of 4788; via New Zealand coastal ports. 3 cleaniers with a net tonnage of 9672, and 4 hospital ships with a net tonnage of 14,540; Irom British possessions (other than Australian colonies) direct, 1 steamer with a net tonnage of 2634. From New Zealand coastal portr-, 6 steamer with a net tonnage of 21,169; Admiralty. 12 steamers with a net tonnage of (410; from foreign ports via Now Zealand coastal portE, 1 hospital ship- with a net tonnago of 5952. Government vessels from New Zealand coastal ports, 27 with a net tonnago of 9182; sundry vessels, 12 with a net tonnage of 5873, and 1 warship with a displacement of 5040. "Thi6 makes a grand total of all arriports, 6 steamers with a net tonnago of 2,413,031 as against the previous year of 30M vessels with a net tonnago.of 2,543,286, being a decrease of 125 vessels and a net tonnage of 130,255. Nineteen steamers with a net tonnage of 69,500 entered port en route for other ports for bunker coal and stores only, and therefore were exempt from port charges. During the twelve months just ended, tho port was visited by several of the largest steamers trading to tho Southern Homisphere; seven of these tteamcrs were over five hundred, and sixty feet, and one over six hundred and seventy feot in length; Phrce steamers when loaded were drawing tho respective draughts of thirty-three feet, thirty-three feet one iuch, and thirty-three feet six inches. These are tho deepest .draughts that have over left a New Zealand port. All the above steamers loaded at tho King's Wharf, that being tho only berthage that could take such a deep draught. "Now that the great war seems to bo drawing to a close I think that the board should prepare for the after-war trade of the port and push on with the construction of the Pipitea Wharf (which will give two good deep-water berths) and the To Aro Wharf and Jervois Quay breast-work-which will also give good berthage. "The services of the board's- pilots were engaged by 42 vessels with a net tonnage of 145,326 from sea to anchorage, and by 25 vessels, with a net tonnage of 107,835 from anchorage .to sea. Five hundred and thirty vessels with a not tonnage of 1921,754 were removed to and from the wharves. The total mimbci of vessels handled bv the pilotß was 597 with a net tonnage of 2.174.915 as against the previous yonr of 577 with a net tonnage of 2.111,372, being an increase of 20 vessels with a- net tonnage of 63,543. Twelve removals "of vessels with a net tonnage, of 4-5,990 were ' for traffic purposes. Twenty-one removals I of mail steamers with a net tonnage of I '6.323 (being -under contract to the New Zealand Government) were free. Forty-six removals of steamers with a not tonnage . of 130.600 dicing under charter to the New Zealand Governmont) were free. Four removals of warships with a tonnage displacement of 20,160 were free. Total nmn- ' her of free removals, 83, with a net tonnage of 244,078."
