FATAL ACCIDENT
STRUCK BY A MOTOE-CAE,
A fatal accident occurred in Constable Strent about a. quarter to 1 o'clock yesterday . afternoon, the victim being a' married man named Kobert Hayward Fisher, of lb Hiropi Street, who was knocked down by a motor-car after alighting from a tramcar. '
Deceased, who was about 50 years of age, was formerly, a commercial traveller, but. of late he had been engaged in the Defends stores.- . Ho'steppeif off the tramcar at the Owep Street-stop, and was in the act of crossing to the southern side' of Constable Street when the motor-car, owned by Mr. E. L. Mowbray, of lower Hutt. : and driven by James Heavey, came (10-fii the hill, Deceased appeared to ..-hesitate and turn back, but.he moved forward again, and before Heavey.could pull up, the motor-car collided with him, knocking him down, and dragging him for a distance of about 27ft. Mr Mowbray was in the car at the time, and he states that'the speed at. which it was travelling was befaveen thirteen and fourteen miles, an. hour. The car was on theprope" side of the •thoroughfare, and 'was moving under its own weight, as the engine was. declutched. When picked'up Fisher was found to be badly .cut about, aiiil Was .-unconscious. He was at once removed to the hospital in Mr. Mowbray's ca". but.died within fivo minutes of ar-. rival.
