THE POULTRY INDUSTRY
VALUE Ol' SMALLHOLDINGS. Mr. E. Gallichan, of Wellington, returned yesterday from Chiistchurch, where he has been attending the luinual conference of the N.Z. Poultry Assciation. Speaking to it Dostixiox reporter ho eaid the conference had been distinctly a good one. and excellent work had been dono from commercial and educational standpoints. It was the first time for a number of years that the conference had been held in Christehurch, ami it had been the means of demonstrating to the delegates ami other members of the conference what could .be done on one. two, and three-.acres of land. "I.personally saw," said Jlr. Gnllk>an, "up to ono thousand fowls running on an acre of lan_d;on the traniliuo adjacent to the city, giving a family a very comfortable living and a healthy occupation. This struck me forcibly, and there were so many instances of the same thing round about 'Christchurch. If there were more of these small farms in and about Wellington it wonldt go a long ,way towards making poultry a little more plentiful, and perhaps a little cheaper than is tho case. It may lie said that increased production iiiid more farms wquld lower prices. That is uot tho case, for tho situation is governed entirely by tho price of wheat." The conference next year is to be held in Duriedin, and if the same amount of good work was got through there as in Christchurch, it would prove that it was good policy to move the conferences round. The industry was of great importance to New Zealand, and the conferences stimulated a healthy enthusiasm, and circulated a vast amount of'valuable information. '
