THE TROUBLE AT WAIHI

Tlie management of the Waihi Company in a statement' with reference, to the present' troublo states that after tlx® strike in 1912 a union was formed entirely of miners and lmttcry hands, who favoured the settlement of disputes by arbitration, as opposed to direct action by the Federation, oi Labour. Later, the original members T>f the unipn left to take up other work. New members came in, and the policy of the union was changed, till in '1916 there was a'majority sufficient to join the Federation 'of Labour. The union continued to press its demands till in November, 191S, an agreement was reached under which nine men specified by name were exempted from joining the union. This was embodied in an industrial agreement. The union his again demanded the dismissal of arbitrationist employees, which the company resists, as it would be a gross breach of faith not to protect loyal employees who left the union on account of its revolutionary politics. They intend to bold to this decision, in face of any action the federation mar take.
