HAIRDRESSERS' CLAIMS
SHORTER HOUBS AND HIGHER WAGES. . In Hifi new claims filed by tho Wellington Hairdressers, Hairworkws, and Wigmakers' Assistants' Union it is proposed that the hours of work should bo reduced from 52 per wool; to JS. 'The new houirs clause rends:—"The hours of work shall bo -IS ])sr week, exclusive of meal hours. The recognised hours of work in each establishment shall bo between 8 a.m. and G p.m. on tour days of the week, and not later tlinn 72.30 p.m. on the weekly, half-holiday, ami not Inter than 8 p.m. , on tho weekly late night* except on Christmas Eve (9 p.m.) and New Tear's Eve, when 8 p.m. shall Ire observed." Under the 'jxlstioff award the actual houra worked each day rive fixed by the employe]', according jo the circumstances of his business, with provision for regulating the horn's on certain days of the week. As to wages, it is now desired that the minimum for all journeymen and journeywomen shall be £i nor week, whtireas the present rate is M ss. (for first chairman), and £3 (for all others). Other clauses in the new demands nre :— Meal Hours.—Meal hours shall !,« pr. ranged by each employer'in each establishment according to the e : " , ei''.i:.-na"■■'■■ of his. business, so that not less i than one hour shall be- allowed oft for dinner, between the hours of 12 noon and 2_ p.m. on five days of the week, and on Saturday, or, the day hereinafter appointed in its place, one' hour for tea between 5 p.m. nnd 7 p.m. Holidays.—Tho following days shall be observed' as full holidays:—New ■ Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday. Labour Day, Sovereign's Birthday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Anniversary Day, and the second Tuesday in February (which shall be set apart as hairdressere' picnic day). No deduction shall bo made from the week's wages for any' of the aforesaid holidays: In case any of the holidays mentioned shall fall on a Sunday, it shall bo observed on the Monday following, and in the case of the hairdressers' picnic, as well as the other' holidays, tho usual half-holiday shall be observed in that week. One week's holiday annually on full pay shall be given to each employee in each estabiishment'afler twelve months' service in vsuch establishment. There are the usual provisions covering apprentices, preference, and other such matters. In regard to casual work a clause reads:—Casual labour shall be paid for at the rate of not K<« than 15s. for long days, and not less than 12s. 6d. for other days, except on (he statutory Half-holiday, when, it ehall be 7s. Cd. The dismite will come before the Conciliation Council on March 24, and tho assessors, for the union will be Messrs. W. H. Simms, A. Duncan, and C. Shakes. '
