SPREAD OF CATTLE TICK
PROPOSED-REGULATIONS,
.The matter of'taking.; action to cope with the spread of.;thc.cattle:tick in the ' 'Auckland.' district will bo'considered at a conference of >'■ representatives . of the Farmers'- Union, the 'local 6tobk auc-. tioneering firms, and; officers of the Department of Agriculture at Auckland on ■ .Thursday. ■. ;: .. Measures to prevent .the spread of the cattle'tick were discussed at a conference on October 7' last. Dr. C. J, Reakes. Director-General, of the- Department-of '• Agriculture, then: explained that 'it was proposed,'to,gazette Regulations making '''prescribed .'areas", in whiclC the ..inspectors' Of '.tho /Department , to :compel stock owners to dip" tick-infested cattle-before ' they were; taken'.out of, the. locality. ,He fyiid that'.dips'" would, be .provided, at various places, :and the cost of these would in all ' probability' be : borne-by the Government. After "discussing', the :matter,"it was decided to; request -Dr. Reakes to defer the proposed regulations for six months; to.' enable the Farmers' Union to collect all possiblo data, bearing on the subject through its various branches. The. matter was subsequently , discussed at meetings of the provincial executive, of the Farmers' Union, when strong opposition to a suggestion to hayo North Auckland gazetted a'."prescribed-, area" was,, voiced by the North ;Auckiand re- ' presentatives. _It is-now: stated that the tick-is spreading southward, and that it has-keen.seen-in the.Lowpr Waiknto dis'trict,' as well ns. in certain portions, of the Bay,'of Plenty. The forthcoming conference has been arranged- to dismiss ' tho matter in tho light of recent developments.
