PROHIBITION OF EXPORT
. . POTATOES AND HIDES. The matter of the prohibition by the Government of the export of potatoes and hides from New Zealand was discussed by the Auckland branch of the Farmers' Union; and a' ■ resolution protesting against-the embargo was carried unanimously. It v,-as contended .by various members that the Government's continued: interference with prices -of primary products, .either directly-or indirectly, were unnecessary, now . that hostilities, had ceased, and that tho principle: .was' economically unsound, tending .to docrease- production and penalising the producer for the .benefit of other'sections of the community .A telegram with reference to the embargo on hides was received; by the provincial secretary.'to.the Farmers' Union from the Dominion', secretary' to. tho union, stating- that the embargo meant a loss of 10s. to lfe. on each animal, and suggesting".'that-i a united protest by all the provincial.executives should be made to;t,be Government with, a view to having the ■embargo ''removed.... .-
