HOTELKEEPERS FINED

Mr. Dyer, S.M., to-day delivered judgment ia the case in which two hotelkeepers were charged with opening their bars during the period when a proclamation issued by Dr. Makgill, at tie time of tho recent epidemic, was in force. It was contended for the'defence that Dr. De Lisle, District Health Officer for Napier, had never prohibited the sale of liquor, and that Dr. Makgill had no authority within the Napier health district. The Magistrate held that no proof of Dr. De Lisle'* appointment had been siven other than his ,own evidence, and therefore the appointment had not been proved. The defendants had acted very foolishly in not recognising that tho regulations were issued for the welfare of the community. On the charges of keeping their bars onoii the defendants were convicted, and fined £5 each, vith costs s Ono of the defendants was charged with selling liqujr and with permitting treating, and was fined .£5 on each charge.
