THE TURF

NAPIER PARK MEETINGCUP WON BY BATTLE SONG. (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.) Napier, March 7. Glprious weather prevailed for tho opening day ot the Napier Meeting. '1 he Judicial Committee met after the Eslc Handicap, and cautioned C. Emerson for crossing Lord Muskerry. The six acceptors nil went to the post for the Hack Hurdles. Ore Ore was looking a greatly-improved horse, and lie was second favourite to First Line. His jumping was faultless. Kahumanga jumped well, and was going on at the finish, but he never looked like boating the dividend-payers. AVarmbh was a poor fourth, and the other pair finished down the course. AVaterform and Lcighton Lass were not produced in the Esk Hack Handicap. There were no inquiries for anything but Statuette, and the judgment was well founded, for she took charge soon after the start, and won without an effort despite her weight. Honey Bee was the nearest to her into the straight, but Lord Muskerry finished on and beat him for second honours. Teka, who is very sore, and Bagdad declined their Cup engagements, leaving eight, runners, Ilendra was the bestconditioned. A splendid start saw Powder King set the pace from Eewi Polo, and Battle Song and Hendra. At the three furlongs the leader was done with, and Battle Song took charge. Hendra tried to get on terms entering the straight, but tho leader held his own, fiml in the run home he successfully resisted challenges from Tressida and Eewi Poto, who filled the places. Hendra was fourth. The winner scored decisively, and was not the least distressed on pulling up. Tressida improved! a lot on her recent form, but Palm Oil was disappointing, and whipped tho field the greater part of the journey. Ethopian, who looks a promising sort, was at the shortest price in the Trial Hack event. Tinland began the smartest, but the favourite was always handy, and taking charge a furlong from home ho won nicely. AVakatere beat Tinland comfortably. Tho winner is by All Black, and should be a better horse with a. bit of racing. All the starters in the AVelter were evenly backed, and the issue was regarded as very open. Altercation led Tavistock, Retard, and First Salute down the back, but Eetard was steadied, and pulled in behind. Kiltess, Altercation, and Marea.totara were together entering tho straight, but over the last furlong Retard came fast, and won veiw decisively from Maraetotara. Altercation was a noor third, and then came Kiltess and Tavistock in a line.

The bracketed pair, Hetaua and Stammer had most supporters in fcho Saplings Stakes, and the formor, finding his feet quickly, led nearly all the way. Magistrate accompanied him to the distance, where tho top weight came away, and, ridden out. just beat the fast-finishing Makore. Magistrate was a fair third; Crenides drew an outsido position and ran badly. The Speaker, who had raced earlier in the day, was missing from tho Hack Welter fiold. Lovemntcli. was a hot favourite, but Transmission jumped out first, and led all the way. Tho favourite put in a strong challenge in tho straight, but the. leader had a neck's advantage at tho finish. Crosswords was a length away, and then came Recreation. . The three top weights wero evenly backed in the Trying Handicap, but Elocution was the actual favourite. Sea Lord and Demagoguo wero out 111 front to the home turn, where Sweet Corn dashed up on tho outside. Sho was doing her best 'over the last furlong to stall off Rnwckore, and Elocution, bqth of whom finished fast. Necks separated the tivo at the finish. Tho experiment of riding the winner in behind proved successful. Tho totalisator registered =£20,060; last year the sum was ,£16,330. DETAILS OF RACING. By Telecratih.—Press Association.
