With great presence of mind the lad plunged from the high diving board, .fully dressed, and afforded hei assistance, several other lads promptly coming to the rescue. YoTing Doull was loudly praised for his plucky net.
•; Constable 11. Cole, of Palmerston North, has received advice that his son, Sergeant L. W. Cole (M.M.), N.Z.r.A.,| is returning by the Alheiuc, due about March 20. Sergeant Cole has a splendid record of service, and has been 'wounded no fewer than six times. He left with the Eighth Reinforcements, and after recovering' from his third wound wus invalided back to New Zealand, lie joined again with the N.Z.F.A. of the Tweuly-iifth ■ lieiiiforceinents, and subse"quently suffered wounds on three separate occasions, the Inst time being nt, Passclicndaele, after which he was awarded the Military Medal.' Since then Sergeant Cole has been in hospital iu England;
' At a meeting of the Palmerston North Borough Council this week the-'Mayor, on behalf of tlie Royal Humane Society, presented Constable Ernest' Francis Jones with the society's diploma for having , saved the lives of two huU,-Robert Henry Hcske and Charles Jones. In 'making the presentation, the Mayor referred to the plucky -conduct of the officer. He said (lint (he two boys were being swept down the Mnnawalu Hivfer, and would, undoubtedly have-been drowned but for the prompt action ..of Constable Jones. Hβ was fifteen yards away when he heard the cries for help, and at, once rushed to tho'scene and plunged into Ihe swift stream. .He succeeded in gotling hold of both the lads and brought them safely to land. Had.not the rescuer been a very strong and expert swimmer doubtless n. fntnl accident would have occurred. He fell sure that all would join with him in expressing fheir gratification that the constable's gallant conduct had been suitably recognised.' The town also should feel proud of possessing , a citizen who was willing to risk, his life at the call of duty. The constable was loudly applauded on receiving the presentation.
