WORKERS' DWELLINGS
AUCKLAND' CITY COUNCIL DEFEES ACTION. • ' . By Telegraph-Press Association. Auckland, March 6. The Citv Council to-night adopted a recommendation by committee of • the wholo t7iat proposals fpr the erection of workers' dwellings, in connection with which a loan of £250,000 was proposed, be deferred. . The report stated that though, there were in the city a number of dwellings not desirable, the building by-laws.and sanitary inspection were eutficient Safeguards against them being, or becoming, a menace to public . health, Further than that, having regard to the existing financial obligations of the council, and in iew of the reports upon the council's land, the committee was of opinion that action might be deferred, at auv rate for the present. The committee wn:-i also of opinion that rfhile several areas in the thickly populated portion of the city might with advantage bi> remodelled, any such policy should not be adopted at present Owing to the -financial obligations already undertaken. Another aspect for consideration was the high cost of building ranterinl and the difficulty of obtaining many lines.
The council adopted a resolution Hint the Works Committee be asked to consider the question of the possibility of remodelling an area in the city and providing some small houses for worker?. It also resolved that the Government be urged to form a, model suburb for workers' houses at Orakai. ■
