DIRECTOR OF TELEPHONES
■ ME. T. BUCKLEY.' } Mr. Timothy Buckley, Director of Tele- '. phones for the Dominion, has retired from the Post And Telegrapn Departmi.-nt on superannuation, after forty-thiree years' service. He joined the Service as ■ a cadet on January 15, 1876, and four months later was transferred to Blenheim, wbere he remained, until August, 1879, ; ■when he returned to Wellington. He went to Dunedin as a telegraphist in 1883, and the same year was' appointed postmaster at St. Bathans. In 1888 Mr. Buckley was transferred to Havelock es postmaster, and_two years later saw him performing similar outiea at Ophir. In 1893 he returned to Wellington, and as a keen student of electricity is applied to telegraph and telephono v-ork, showed such pronounced ability that five years later saw him established in the position of Assistant Eleotrioian. He succeeded to the post of Chief Electrician in 1902, and on the resignation of Mr. J. Orchiston, Chief Telegraph Engineer, la3t year, Mr. Buckley became Director of Telephones. His knowledge of modern telephones, was quickened by a trip to America some six years ago, wk-n ne studied closely the various automatic systems, and subsequently was concerned in the Introduction'of the automatic telephone ey'stera into New Zealand, As a careful, painstaking, and conscientious officer, Mr. Buckley will be missed at headquarters. His duties will be assumed by,the Chief Telegraph Engineer (Mir. B. A;.Shrimpton) who has been a fellow officer of Mr. Buckley for many years..
