RAILWAYMEN
REPLY TO MINISTER'S STATEMENT. By Teleeraph—Press Association. Auckland, March 1. The railwayman, replying to the statement by the Hon. W. H. Hemes; Minister of Railways, state that hours, not wages, was the more important question'. Couditions as to the length or slnits wero specially complained of. llie system of long hours, they urge, is unfair to them, and also to the travelling public, whose safety is jeopardised, liie workshops and maintenanco men had an eight-hour day and'overtime for night work, and the locomotive men asked to be placed on the same footing. It was suggested that the railwaymens -caso should be investigated by an impartial tribunal-by a Magistrate, Conciliation Commissioner, or the Conciliation Louncil.
