ADRIFT IN COOK STRAIT
STEAMER TEMPORARILY DISABLED. A serious breakdown in the engineirooni of the Union Company's steamer Rosamond (721 tons) caused her to make a protneted trip from the south to Wellington, where she arrived safely yesterday morning. The Rosamond sailed from Timnru at 6 p.m.. on Thursday, and would have arrived here on Saturday morning had not a high-pressure piston—a vital part of her machinery—suddenly broken . ■nhen she was in Palliser Bay, about 20 miles off Wellington Heads, at 8 o'clock in the morning. To effect' temporary repairs to enable the ship to make port was a difficult task, and it took fourteen hours, to accomplish it. ' A northerly wind was blowing, and'the'vessel -was in some danger 'of drifting, on shore. At 10 p.m. the Rosamond, steaming at a very slow .'speed, continued her way into harbour and dropped anchor in the stream at 7.40 a.m. yesterday, being later moved to a berth at No. 14 Jervois Quay breastwork by the tug Terawhiti. It will take the best part of three'days to permanently repair the damage.
