SECOND DEMONSTRATION NIGHT

A SUCCESSFUL CONCERT

FURTHER RESULTS (ANNOUNCED.

The second "demonstration concert" in connection w'itli the competitions was given in the Town Hall last evening before a good attendance. ' The programme was a comprehensive and interesting one, employing the best talent that the competitions had' discovered. Miss Gladys Lorimcr began the entertainment with a daintily rendered piano solo, "Fantasies Impromptu." She was succeeded by the tiniest and cutest of elocutionists', baby liietty Hoare, who briefly related "The Tale of a Fairy," nml retired covered with glory. Miss Doreen M'Clalchy, clad in the coolest of 1 white ducks, and manipulating a swagger cane, acceptably rendered her now familiar, "All Aboard for Monkey : Town," ' and' then made way for Jliss Joyce Couzens, wl|o gracefijlly performed a cl.assio I dance. Distinct brevity characterised tho next item, which was a pleasing rendering by littlo Miss Edna Sneddon of t a humoresque. Master Leith Eiddell' opeficd school in the lively manner of fiickens's "Squeers," and went through' the rigmarole of that, model pedagoguo \fith a zest and a will that did not fail to impress the audience. His make-up ■ was excellent. The patriotic 6ong "Carry On" was successfully 6ung by Miss Mona Castle. In "Two Pieces by Trounselle'," "Tanner's Quartet" of juveniles gave \ ft delightful display of budding musical talent.' They. made their exit to the accompaniment of loud and enthusiastic applause, a tribute unquestionably deserved. Miss Annie Currie danced an Irish, jig '.and .Mrs. Menard's 'juvehila chorus sang quite inspiringly the song "As the Flag Goes By." Mrs.- Myrtle Haywood rendered with distinction the' mezzo-soprano solo "Magdalen at Michael's Gate." In "A Melodrama" (recitation) Jlr, V. Evans admirably "hit off" • that type of stage production which perishes in the throes of turgid eloquence ■ and cheap bombast from every character in the cast. The Wellington} Har-.-monic Society's quartet quite creditably rendered "The Long Day Closes," while Mr. W. Brittenden earned favour with his patriotic song, "The Glories of the Sea." The tragical allegory of the woman who sought to know the future and slew her faith and hope in the achievement of her desire was "-retold with genuine dramatic • power by Miss Pauline Shotlander. The house expressed high appreciation of "Wait," as sung by Miss Nellie-Amies, who. for one so young, displayed considerable ability. Misses Maliel Gallichan and Helen Millar presented the sketch "A Cheerful Companion," illustrating the depths of wretchedness to which "cheer'fulness" can drag one down. Thei; followed "The Pipes of Pan," by Miss Cicelv Audibert, who had highly distinguished herself 111 quite a number of vocal classes, arid was quite up to her usual form. Mr. L. D. ,TI Powers's contribution to the programme was a spir-' ited recitation of "Bannerman Rode tho Grey." Misses Mona Castle and Marion Newman sang tunefully the duet "Come, Sing to Me," and the conclusion of a pleasant entertainment was supplied by the performance of .Miss Fanny Ivutner and Miss Dori6 Stevens,.in "Rosa Dartoil's Revenge," a dramatic sceno from "Davil Copperfield." The Comedietta. Mr. J. P. Montague announced the r>' 6ult of tho competition for the best comedietta. It was as under:—"'A Cockney Camouflage" (performed by. members of tho "Charley's "Aunt" Club), 187 points, 1; "Kipper" (performed by Misses Alcxu Elton, Linnie Nicholas, Mabel Lawton, Frances Snell, — Weniyee, Doris Stevens, and Mr. 0. Zorn), 162, 2; "The New Hat" (performed by Misses Mabel Gallichan, Frances, Snell, Plo Gow, and Mr. 0. Zorn), 158, 3. "At the Registry Office" (performed by Misses Doris Stev- | ens and Fanny Kutner) was highly comj mended.

Of tlie winning' comedietta, the judge said: "The construction of it was veryexcellent. fitted in very admirably. It seemed to be well thought out, and 'it seemed to me that it. was n little play . that would live and have interest for some years to come. This play stood clean out in respect to finish and stagecraft, and the general presentation of it was on altogether a different'plane from that of the | other plays."
