LIFE SAVING

MEETING OF' WELLINGTON CENTRE. The Wellington Head Centre of the Eoyal Life-Saving Society mot on Thursday, Mr. G. C. Hill presiding. Tho chairman congratulated the society's secretary, Mr. W. C. Collier, on the honour accorded him by the, society in London, which hatt conferred on him tho Distinguished Service Medal, in recognition of the valuable services he had ■ rendered. The local body had only been in evidence for nine years, but during that period excellent work had been accomplished. Mr. Collier thoroughly deserved the honour, for lie had worked strenuously. So far only twb such medals had been presented to New Zealanders. Mr. Collier suitably responded. The sooiety. decided not to take any • action respecting 'a suggestion that it should continue with the schools in obtaining Ave days' free' admission to tho baths. It was pointed out by the chairman that the City Council had given every encouragement to children to learn swimming, and it was considered that the present free passes were sufficient to meet requirements. . ' ; A communication was received from Dr. J. 11. Kemjj (holiorary medical officer to the society), stating that .he considered it inadvisable to altering the routine method of resuscitation, as laid! down in tho society's official hand-book. All members agreed with the medical officer's opinion, and it was stated that experience had proved the method quite the best. Dr. ICemp suggested that the body of the patient be kept warm by some covering during the practice of resuscitation. It was decided not to alter the present methods. Reference was made by the chairman to the recent drowning accident at Eona Bay, and lie pointed out that the need for proficient life-savers* onthe EastIwurno beach very apparont. He expressed the' opinion that had there been on Jiand at the time, trained lifesavers the soldier's life might have been saved.- It was decided to write to the Eastbourne Borough Council, the Wellington City Council, and the Hult County Council, with a view to calling a public meeting to bo held at Eona Bay to discuss the matter of forming lifesaving clubs and the provision of lifesaving reels.

Mr. R. Binns Ims been appointed custodian of the Lyatl Bay beach, in place of Mr. E. M. Minifie resigned. Mr. H. E. H. Bird, acting-chief instructor of the Wellington Head Centre of the society, is at'present instructing the Mount Cook Police nnd 6cout masters in the method of life-saving.

It was announced that both Maranui nn:l -Island Bay Surf Clubs were at present training large life-saving teams.

■ In connection with the schools competitions, Mr. Bird reported tßafc the entries for the schools shield were coming in freely. The comuatition will be decided in' the last week- of March or tli.! first week of April.
