THE EVENING PERFORMANCE,
That the competitions have "caugnt m" has been abundantly proved by the ncreasing attendances not only during ;ho daytime, but in the evenings, and the iociely is now in the happy position of jeing able to promise a continuance of sonipetitions in Wellington. Last evenng's programme opened with the ortori'erous comedietta Spring Onione, in vhieh a pair of foolish lovers, both of vhom had been partaking of the "frag'ant" vegetable mentioned, get into a ■oniical misunderstanding through fancy- ; ng the existence of an antipathy to tun novitable result of eating spring onions. Miss L. C. Adams and Mr. W. Searle, oolh of Cliristchurdi, were the perforni>rs. Little flaxen-haired Fay Smyth and Soiinio Flanagan revived that old-time luet, "No, Sir," which they acted very jrettilv. Rita Howe and Pearl Jacobs jaiicr "'Golliwog-/ , and Dorothy M Jenkins ind Kathleen Anderson, both exceedingly lervous, sang "In the Dusk of the Twiight" There were only two, entries lor ;he children's action song (ensemble). I'll© Newtown Marist Bros.' School prodded an entertaining number in Aboard lie Man-o'-Wav," but instead of appeavng as "bovs in blue"- they insisted on 'the wearin' of the green." Their nvn s ,vere the l'etone girls, who trilled AHunting We Will Go." attired, m the traditional scarlet of the.hunting held, and supplemented it with a lively hopping dance which caught the fancy of the audience. In the patriotic 6ong, contet for gentlemen, Mr. W. B. Bnttenden sang "The Glory of the Sea," a fine song that, smacked of recent renoi n achieved by England'on the sea. Ihe only other recall in this section wasl• Harry Phipps, whose selection, The Death of Nelson," was very carefully sung, but without any of tuoso high lights which give flair to patriotic songs. The art of Mr. Phipps is too placid. The soprano (or mesywoyrano championship of the competitions depended on the winner of the operatic wlo last evening, and the announcement to that effect wlietted tlw interest of the audience, as it was well known that the con est was bcUeen a Wellington and a Chnstchurch singer. Mia Cicely Audibert selected a W charming and melodious ana from l. - nani," and eang it wita much yoiithiul grace and charm. The .recitative ■»« gun; somewhat perfurctonly bu; the air was prettily carolled. Mrs. Myrtle H.v - ward selected the much more difficult 0 well as during, the daytime, a ftongj she succeeded in inveshng the ana *ith a wreath of emotional meaning. M>« and streneth under perfect control. One gvettedUat. Jlhe Jones die not comwts in the other classes. Kutner showed an unsiwnected gift for comedy in a sketch entitled ™ "indlady." and Mr. V. Miss Ellen Miller and Miss Mabel Galliclian appeared to distinct advantage in the humorous Retell A Cheerful Companion.-' The laclin nuws h mour of Mi U Galliehan induced hearty a ghter, and Miss Miller's dialogue was e«» spoken. Three very fine expositions of "Matri Ditect.ssimae J\\. K Henlevi were given by Messrs. a. b. lilklii V Evans, and F. Hargreayes. The impromptu, ciebato on the subject "Are Women Vainer Than Men" caused a stood deal of healthy amusement. In giving judgment , ™ the soprano (or inU championship. Mr. Gregson said that the winner, Miss Cicely And be , of Christcliurch, had selected a choimiiiK number in the cavahna irom &i----nani," and one well within .her range. Mrs. Hayward had suffered in selecting a liuuiber just a little beyond her powers (in "Ah, foue e ltd"), a*d her hißhest notes had not been too secure. Mss Peggy Jones was the surprise of the Sutions. She had a very beautiful soprano voice, very clear and niu«oai. and well under control, probably the best voice of the competitions. As he was making his final appearance, Mr. Gregsnn <m>rc«sed his appreciation of the nannef in which he had been made Stable during, the competition. !
