TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP IN PEENCH. Ry TrlcTTirl'.— Vrees Association. Christcjiurch, February 25. The , University Semite resolved, with a view to-bringing about closer relationship between Prance and New Zealand, and promoting a better knowledge of tho French language, that the Dominion Government be recomineiifei to provide funds for a travelling scholarship in French of £IM for one year, to be held by a graduate who proposes to become. a modern language teacher and who v.-ill definite preparation for tho teaching profession. On the motion of the vice-chancellor, the following- motion was carried: ''That tho permission granted this session by the senate to a scholar of this University detained in England to hold his.scholarship at a British University, be extended to all scholars of the University similarly situated, and that the agent in London be instructed to communicate tliis permission fo them. \V motion by Professor Hunter with the object of doing away with the present (system of permitting members of tho senate to vote by proxy, was lost. Tt was decided that the committee to report to the Board of Studies be asked to consider tho advisableness of revising tho statute of the diploma in journalism in the direction of providing a more suitable !"ii'l elastic syllabus. Dr.Hight,' who moved the motion, said there were various subjects more suitable for the diploma than those now included in the course, and he expressed the opinion that at least one science should be included. Dr. Ilijjht moved that the senate invite an expression of opinion from the professorial I'iiirds in regard to the advisableness of organising some form of annual public ceremony in connection with tho conferring of degrees, and consider the whole question at tho next April mooting. Mr. IT. von Haast said such n course would mean the revival of the old capping day, which had so often resulted i'l unseemly seenps.
