FISHERIES COMMISSION
EVIDENCE AS TO THE' RESULT. OF TRAWLING. By Telegraph—Press Association, Auckland, February 25. Giving evidence before the Northern Fisheries Commission to-dny, the.president of the Northern Fishermen's Union said thatiSlO or £12 a week for a boat worked by two m«n was the average return prior to the coming of the trawlers. This was mainly the return from line fishing. At that time it would cost :about.J33 10s. a week to ran a boat, leaving £2 10s'. or £3. a week for each man. He was of opinion that there was a large quantity of small fish killed by the trawl, which did not come to the surface. He was of opinion that many small fish took shelter in the shells on tho bottom, as many small fish had been found in mussel shells. It was reasonable to suppose that they had taken shelter there, and had been crushed by the trawl.
