PASSENGER RATES
GOVERNMENT DESIRES REDUCTION The icting-Frime Minister (Sir James Allen) stated yesterday that the Government had been doiiig its best to secure a reduction in oversea passenger rates. The latest cablegram on the subject from the British Ministry of Shipping states that it has been ascertained from tlio shipping companies that the passenger rates are wholly contingent upon a i.ossible reduction in runmug costs. All tendencies at present are in tbe contrary direction. , , , ■ , The shipping companies, added the cablegram, have assured the Ministry of Shipping that they are keenly alive to the fact that it is at least os. desirable in their own interests as m the interests of passengers to. reduce tne present rates. The companies fully realise that the rates have the effect of reduo ' ing the volume of traffic.
