SWIMMING GALA AT ISLAND BAY
■ The Island Bay Life-Saving and Surf Club's annual gala was held on Saturday afternoon. Between three and four thousand people were present. The weather was fine but overcast, with light southerly breeze. Results of the race:— Boys (under 16), aOyds.-Robinson, 1; Keith, 2 Ginders, 3. Girls (under 16), 25yds.-\Tean Bruce, 1; Kathleen Eeece, 2; May Francis and E. Eickards, 3. ' Boys (under 13), 25yds.-Turfis, 1; Farnail, 2; Ginders, 3. Men, 50yds.—Martin, 1; M'Gill, 2; Bryne, 3.. Men, 50yds., breast-stroke—Francis, 1; Elton, 2; Anderson, 3. Ladies, 50yds.—Jeannie Post, 1; Maud Allen, 2; K. Skinner, 3. Men, 200 yds., free style-Gamble, 1; Small, 2. , ■ Neat diving—Neal, 1; Francis, 2. Fancy diving—Francis, 1; Neal, 2. Life-saving reel display competitionIsland Bay, l'j Maranui, 2. -These two squads gave an exhibition of land drill ■ under the able direction of Mr. Collier, who explained each movement involved in the art of rescuing, life-saving and restoration "of life. The life-saving reel competition was a very interesting event, and was keenly competed for between Maranui and Island Bay. The final event of the day-the 200 yds. free style—was a splendid A'ace, and Gamble won from D. Small by a few inches only. The diving events from the pier were much .appreciated by the onlookers, the fancy diving causing a good deal of merriment. There were 63 entries for the baby show, and Mrs. Barnard and Mm SteI vens, who acted as judges, found it no easy task to pick the best baby from the fine collection on show. .Best baby in show-Joe Hull, 1; Keneth Karney, 2. Best baby (under 12 months)—Katy Wood, 1; Roma Taylor, 2. Best baby girl (under two years)—Valer.v Uren, 1; Mavis Eeed, 2. . Best boy (under 12 months)—Kenith Karney, 1; Clifford Rcmmers. 2. Best boy (under two years)— Joe Hull, 1; Tom Hanson, 2. Bean competition—Won by Mr. Lundon, Island Bay; No. 1539. The treasure hunt was a real hunt, in which both old and young thoroughly enjoyed themselves. There were| 61 prizes, faithfully buried by two old residents of the Bay—Mr. John M'Minnon and Mr. Brodnck. Some of the treasures are 6till unclaimed. Mrs. Gordon Stevens, with a bevy of kdies,- dispensed afternoon tea and refreshmsnts to a large number of visitors.
