THE MAIvURA'S APPLES. , -It is reported that the Government has agreed to pay; compensation to New Zealand importers who suffered loss through the over-carrying cf the Makura's consignment of apples, jlhe-reported decision is one of considerable importance to Auckland fruit merchants, who have suffered a loss of. about .£7OOO -through tho delayed sale of : the,fruit. v This consignment, of apples, consisting of 11,000 cases, arrived from' British Columbia by the Jfakura about the end of November. The ship.-was tiuaraniiiwd; and the apples carried on to Sydney. They were subsequently! returned to Auckland, on' January 21,-.' and ' were' at. that time in talr condition, although they had lost a certain amount of weight and flavour. .Of thb shipment, 8000 ccses were consigned, to Auckland importers, and the rAnainder were distributed between AVellington, Christchurcli, and i'unedin. They arrived back in New Zealand at a time when the local apples vere c.n the market, causing a glut. Thus the apples. v;hich should have sold.in November at from ,245. to 30s. t)ei'.i'a?e, brought.only from Gs. to 7s.'
