An exciting- fisticuff encounter occurred this morning on the fimnaru Railway Station just before the c;-.rly morning train departed for Dunedin. The protagonists were two, well-known members of the military police,. Serge mt Lattimore, and Corporal Jackson, the sergeant getting ! decidedly the worst cf the bout. Both I were in civilian dress when the fight took place. It appears that Corporal Jackson, who lias been doing military duty in Oamaru for some time, got to know that Serjeant Lnttimore, dressed in civilian clothes, had arrived from Dunedin, and, it is alleged, was spying on tne movements of the corporal. It then became another easeiof the biter bit, for this mornimr Corporal Jackson was fcarch..'g for his sergeant. Several chases yesterday after the alleged spy having ended in failure to catch a fleeing sergeant, the chased and the chaser melon the railway station this morning 'when Lattimore was in the act of taking the tram back to Dunedin. A xeal set-to was witnessed by the public. Lattimore was severely punished, mid took the train to Dunedin a. sadder and wiser military policeman. Corporal Jackson is a returnedl soldier, and comes of a family of jive soldiers. He served on Gallipoli, and is a well-known Auckland athlete and boxer, being .a recent resident of North-' 00 ,,'., ? e , ,s fnn »iliarly known as "Stonewall Jackson. He was for many months in charge of the. quarantine station at Dunedin. Corporal Jackson declares that he has been forced to rake extreme meas- ; lives in the interests of the returned men as a protest against the methods of the military police. He returned to Dunedin to-night under open arrest and demands a court-martial and the fullest public inquiry. ,
Sergeant Lattimore, who has-not seen active service, is a veil-known member ot the military police. He recently raised a. public protest by the arrest of a returned soldier in Dunedin wearing the D.C.M.. and who wM under the doctor's care. He has been stationed at Foatherstort.Wellington, Dunedin, Christchurch, and Invereargill.
