ONSLOW AND THE AMALGAMATION
MEETING OP THE COUNCIL. The ratepayers of the borough of Onslow having agreed to amalgamate with tho city, the Borough Council may be said to be in a moribund condition. Tho council meeting last evening was the last but one before the borough merges with the city. Mr. J. M. Dale (the Mayor) presided, and congratulated the council on the successful result of the poll. He stated that the ratepayers must enrol on the Onslow borough roll by Mnrch 31 in the usual way. Tho council would have to'meet on March 12, in' order to certifv to the district electors' roll. Ho thought that every member of the council was entitled .to be congratulated on the result, and he deprecated the attempt that had been made to scramble for credit. Councillor P. IV Hodgson-said that he was at the informal meeting that had been described as a mutual admiration society. He explained that he was there in ignorance, and was under the impression that other councillors were present. He admitted that at-first he had been neutral as regards amalgamation, but he had latterly done his best for the proposal. He was not entitled to any .congratulations, hut ho. thought the others were, aiid especially the Mayor. Councillor A. E. Build also referred to tho informal meeting which he said was j of a more or less private chnracter. ■Tlie meeting was held after tho poll was declared, and ho (Councillor Build) gave some details of the history of the. movement which led up to amalgamation, and the facts were considered to lie interesting enough to be sent to tho Press, which was done.' He sought no special, credit for himself. He eulogised the services rendered bv the Mayor in the cause of amalgamation, and moved that the council desires lo place on record.its appreciation of the able manner in Which 'the Alavor has conducted the negotiations with Hit- City Council lor amalgamation. , Councillor A. B. Tupp. seconded lhe .motion, which was carried. It was decided to approach lhe Railwav Department with a view In having the pre-war train service to Johnsnnville reinstated.
