LOWER HUTT BOROUGH
o MEETING OP THE COUNCIL. The fortnightly,meeting of the Lower Unit Borough Council was held last evening. There were present: His Worship the Mayor, (Mr. E. P. Rishworth), and Councillors'A. J. Hobbs, A. ,T." West, W. K'err, W. T. Cotton, S. Clendon, J. Brosell, W. Walton, W. G. Meldruni, and J. W. F M'Dougall The Town Clerk Pelone, forwarded a copy of the gas manager's report in reference to the coal supplies for gns-nink-mg. Councillor Clendon said he was satislied that the report was a straight outline of the situation, and he thought that if necessary thev should meet Pelone. in the mailer. Councillor Brasell said Petone wanted every consideration given them, but did not want to give anything at all. The Mayor said that he was sure the shortage was due lo the causes mentioned in the report, and that if the necessity arose immediate sleps would be taken to conserve the supply. On his motion it was decided to'inform (he Petone Council that the Lower Hutt Borough Council would do all in its power to assist them if Ihe necssitv arose. The Mayor and tho borough engineer were appointed tho council's representatives at. tho forthcoming town-planning conference. The manager of the King George Theatre, m reply to the council's request for sanitary conveniences at the theatre, staled (hat he could not understand what Ihe council wanted; their bylaws dealing.with (he matter wer/? very vague. Sanitary conveniences were provided for both sexes, and the management would not put in anything in the shape of a public convenience. Ihe Mayor stated that Ihe manager of the theatre was suggesting that the conncil was trying to.get something in tho way of a public convenience, 'when it was merely insisting on a matter concerning decency and Ihe good conduct of the theatre. It was resolved, on the motion of Ihe JHyor, seconded by Councillor Walton, that a copy of the manager's letter be Kent lo Mr Slater," the owner of the building, and a copy of the engineer's "'port lo the manager of the theatre. Mr. I;. L. Simpson wrote, pointing out that the council's rubbish cart hud not visued his premises for u period of six weeks, all hough tho arrangement was tor a fortuigntly removal.-The borough engineer explained (hat the cause was due to the Christmas holidays, and au oversight on the part of an employee. very efiort was being made to see that the service was properly carried out. Mr. .Tolifle, on behalf of a number of ratepayers in Houtajiia. Square, asked the council to purchase as a reserve a site in llautama .Square. He stated that the land could now be purchased for £350 and an option had been acquired over it' Iho ratepayers who signed the petition were prepared to pay the interest and sinking fund on a loan if Ihe council would purchase it.-On the motion of Councillor M'Dougall, seconded by Conncillor Cotton, jt was decided to'proceed u.V' way ot special order, to raise the money necessary for the purpose
