„ALLENBY, LE BON GENERAL"
One who served with General Allenby in Flanders and Franco when he was iu command of the Third Army before going to Palestine, tells at length the story of the' General's kindness to little French and Belgian children, and concludes as follows:— "One day it shall be written of how General Sir Edmund Allenby, on the first day of the Battle of Arras, 1917 (which at that time was the greatest military success in British history), walked out of his office, at a, moment when he knew that for at least half an hour he could get no more useful information as to the progress of the battle, went into a local patisserie, and bought a bag of buns, which ho then took .round himself to his little maimed gir.l friend. Then he walked quietly back; in a few minutes his chief of staff brought him the information he .required, and he calmly telephoned his orders for the cavalry to advance. As an example of calm, that incident (which is perfectly true) is hard •to beat. . . . And one day I shall tell Irene the real point about those buns."
