', At to-night's meeting of the City Council the following motion was carried: "That this council views with alarm the present coal shortage, especially in view of the coming winter, and urges on tho Government the necessity for maintaining the 6upply of the Canterbury mines." It was stated in the di& cussion that the coal shortage this winter was going to be-one of the most sen ious problems ever faced by this city!
