.. p _ IN THE TECHNICAL SCHOOLS. "It does not seem to be generally known," said the Minister of,. Education yesterday, in referring to the "free facilities provided for education, "that under regulations issued in 1817 provision is made whereby pupils over the age of 14 years,, who have not obtained a certificate of proficiency or ?n equivalent or higher qualification, may obtain free tuition at a technical school. To secure this concession they must have been in regular attendance at a public school up to a. date not more than six months prior to the date of admission, and be recommended therefor by an inspector of schools. The elapse of a longer period than six months shall not be held to be a bar in cases -where the Director of Education is satisfied that the pupil was unable sooner to attend a technical school or class. Such free places are tenable for one year from January 1 preceding the date of Admission as a free pupil, bnt the period mar be extended for a second" y.-rnr and again for a third year by the Director of Education on the recommendation of the Bchool authorities, based on the school records and the result of an examination in the subjects included in the pupil's course. Such pupils shall receive regular and appropriate instruction in 'English and arithmetic or olementary mathematics or practical mathematics, but shall not be admitted to classes for commercial subjects. ■
