Sir James Allen left last night for the south. He is going first to Dunedin, and then into the districts of Stirling and Kaitangata, in his own constituency, which have suffered recently by floods. The Minister will return to Wellington on Sunday morning. The Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald leaves to-day for the Bay of Plenty district. He will be absent from Wellington for about a week. The Hon. J. A. Hanan leaves for Napier to-day. On his return to Wellington he will call nt Waipukurau and Wai- ( pawa, arriving-here on Thursday evening. The -Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) returned from a week-end trip to Wanganui last evening. Mr. Edward Anderson, whose health has been failing for some years past, is seriously ill at his residence in Eimu R<Jad, Kelburn. The Hon. G. W. Busssll will return to Wellington to-day. Mr. Henzon Elder, recently discharged from the A.1.F., is returning to his-home in Wellington bv the iloeraki. His brother, Captain P. A. Elder, Ist Battalion, N.Z.R.8., is returning to New Zealand by the Corinthic ' Mr. W. G. Calender, late assistant town clerk at Hastings, and well known in sporting circles in Hawke's Bay, has been appointed manager of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Club, vice Mr. J. I. Cox, who is leaving for England. Mr. Calender has seen considerable active service. He went away as a private, and during his three and a half years' service gained his commission. Dr. W. J. Barclay has tendered his resignation to the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board as medical superintendent oi the Wellington Hospital. Dr. Barclay, who was formerly superintendent of the InvercargiH Hospital, succeeded Dr. Hardwick Smith as medical superintendent here some five years ago, and his administration of the medical side'of the hospital's affairs has earned him the respect and esteem of all with whom he has come in contact, and \ his loss to the institution is considered I a severe one by the members of the board. In 1916 Dr. Barclay undertook war service, by proceeding Home ori the New Zealand hospital ship Maheno, and whilst attached to the medical staff of that vessel was engaged in- transporting wounded soldiers across the English Channel. He returned at the end of that particular commission, and resumed his duties at the Welliugton Hospital. It is his intention to take up private practice in Invcrrargiil, anil to that end has asked to'be relieved of his duties at as early a date as possible. The board will advertise for applicants for the post at an early date. Dr. Barclay is at present on holiday 'leave.

The death occurred, sudenly, at his residence Queen Street, Levin, on Sunday evening of Jlr .Tames Protise, one of the oldest, best-known, ' and mostrespected residents of the. district. The late Mr. Prouse, who was 65 years of ape, was one of. tho pioneers of the sawmilling industry of the district, but for a quarter of a century lias been engaged in farming on lands that were formerly covered with fine bush, which provided work for his mill for some years. He was a member of the local road board, and always took a lively interest in the affairs of the borough and district. He was also a loading member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, of Levin. The deceased, who was a brother of Mr. John Proiise, of Wellington, leaves a widow, four.sons, and one daughter. The funeral' will leave the family residence for the Levin Cemetery at 2 p.m. to-morrow (Wednesday).

The Base Records office reports the death of No. 10/1101. Private William Goldie, a discharged soldier, on February 5, from pneumonia. Deceased was 44 years of age, and single. Mrs. V A: D. M'Lean (friend), Racecourse Eoad, Dannevirke, is his next-of-kin. Mr. G. 11. Elliffo has been appointed district manager for the Public Trust Office at Taihape. The rink skipped by the veteran champion,' Mr. George Price, which won the Wellington Centre's tournament at the New Year, were entertained at the New- : town Club's pavilion on Saturday evening, when tho congratulations of luemlicrs on the win, and particularly on the /performances of the siiip were extended 'in the heartiest manner. • Advantage was taken of the occasion to present a set of pipes to Mr. John Brnckenridge— a figure in tho bowling world of Wellington—on the eve of his departure for Palnierston North, to which town ho lias been transferred by the Post and Telegraph Department, chiefly for health considerations. References of a laudatory nature wore made by Messrs.' H. Raiison, J. Langton, W. Wylie, S. H. Underwood, and G. Noble to Mr. Brackonridge's prowess on the green and his finalities as a sport. In reply, Mr. Brackenridge said that the happiest hours of his life had been spent on the Newtown Club's green.
