W., 2/3028, Dunedin. • WOUNDED SOLDIERS ON TRANSPORTS 1— , ■ Mr., T. A. H. Field, M.P., sent the following letter to the Minister of Defence, Sir James Allen, under date January 25: "I wish to bring under your notice the wane of attention to wounded troops returning to New Zealand. Take the case of the Ruahine, for example.. Men who had hip joint amputations were put 'down in the hold, and sergeants, some in perfect health, who had never been in France,' were travelling second-class. After the limbless men complained to the officer in charge they were brought up to the third-class cabins. Someone in London, however, should be instructed to Bee that more care is taken of wounded men. The food was supposed to be thirdclass passengers' food, but it was very far short of that, the explanation given to the men by the ship's authorities being that the Minister of Food in London was curtailing rations. The food was not nearly equal to tlio food in thfc Is'ew Zealand hospitals in England. No provision was made for men with one arm to give them clean underclothing, as they were unable to do their own washing. If some fruit were provided for wounded soldiers it would be « great boon when they were receiving such coarse faie. I ara'drawing attention to thi'se matters as apparently they could bo easily rectiilr-'l." ■Mr. Field h>\s received the following reply from Sir .Tare"- Allen: "I have received your letter oi January 25, rojrardins the treatment of wounded troons returning to New Zealand, particularly those on board the Euahine. I am having the matter inquired into, and will communicate with you further."
