Miss Hfimertpn, of Christchurcli, is at present a guest of Mm. Hayes at her seaside cottage, Worser J3ay. Mm. S. L. Jackson-, of "Wirokino," Levin, who was in town to meet her brother, Lieutenant Halse, returned to her home yesterday. The cost of completing the work of strengthening the 'fabric of St. Paul's commenced before the war, is estimated at ,£60,000. Quito recently Mr. W. Nosworthy, •M.P., wired to the Hon. D. H. Guthrie iu regard to the fellmongering of sheepskins taken from sheep which perished during the severe winter. TEe Hoii. D. H. Guthrie now states that the Imperial Government has purchased all the country and butchers' sheepskins at prices approved by producers. In view of the pre.sent very weak world's market for pelts there is no hardship to any body of sheepfnrmers in accepting the same.' On the contrary, the freezing companies complain that the. requisition is unduly keeping up the price of skins. In view of the fact that the. whole private business of the fellmongers had been taken away by requisition it would be unfair to allow freezing companies to receive skins for ■fellmongering until the fellmongers were /in a position to compete on equal terms. A plentiful supply of hay is to be seen on the farms through the Waipipi district, which, together with heavy crops of turnips, places the farmers in a good position so far as the wintering of cattle .is concerned. Oat crops and potatoes are likewise plentiful, so despite the recent dry spell, which at one period threatened'to damage the various crops, results very pleasing to the farmers is a sequel to their previous anxiety.
