There has • been a large amount, of forward selling of . oats by merchants this season, and , they-will have a.-much, better quality of grain •to handle ■ than for some years past, as the standard samples when fixed will show. There is practically 110 business doing in oatslieaf chaff. 011 account of there being better out crops-'in the i North Island and of the large amount'of hay having been saved there this summer, it is not anticipated that anything like.- ; the quantity of outside supplies of feed ' will be required, as was' the case last 1 year. Quotations for oatslieaf chaff arc purely nominal. Thero is a fair amount of business passing between merchants in cow grass, as it , is anticipated that this year's crop will 1 be a small one. On the other hand, whito clover is plentitful, and largo quantilies are offering. Most of the crop con- . tains a, large percentage of sorrel, and I this class of seed is selling at from lOd. to Is. 2d„ and some of it is worth oven 1 lees money. There is very little perennial ryegrass offering, but a fairly large quantity of Italian and also somo Western Wolths. These varieties arc selling at from 4s. 9d. to 4s. 6d.. aiid old samples of better quality up to 6s. at country stations. ' A fair amount of cocksfoot seed, grown on the Plains, has been offering, but some of it is badly mixed with fog. The best of it has cold up to Is. per lb.' A 1 line from tho Lyttelton sido of Banks Peninsula,' going 141b. to tho bushel, has been purchased at Is. OJd. per ll>. There , is little business doing in potatoes, but bffei'B of £5 IDs. have been mode lor the main crop oif the forks. The crop is promising well, and although tho area is smaller than last year the yield and ouality will be considerably better. Onions are selling at £4 2s. 6d. at country stations.
