DRIVERS' DISPUTE
,• r * ' ALLEGED "GO-SLOW" TACTICS. The Drivers' Unions appear to bo itaking action ' outside of constitutional methods to compel attention to their claims for better wageS*"and conditions. The allegation is that the unions have ' adopted the I.WIW; trick of-"striking on c the job." } The following statement was made yes--1 terday'on the matter by Mi'. W. I'ryor, 3 secretary of the Employers' Federation i "I want ,to point out that two confer--3 ences have been held, and both -were r conducted in a most friendly way. [ Neither side came near onough to the [ other to secure a. settlement,, .and it rei nmined for other steps to bo tajfen. The employers have- taken the only constitu-tional-course open to, them by citing the [ unions in order.to secure sittings of.the j Conciliation Council throughout, the D.o- ---} minion .toy the purpose of dealing' with : Hie dispute.- The Auckland and Wellirig- ■ ton Drivers' Unions have decided."fo l' adopt I.W.W. methods,*. The Wellington ■ men ; decided to adopt a 'go-slow' policy from • Monday next.'- .In Auckland,. according to Press-reports,.,it' has been de- • cided to apply the .boycott to the .rente 1 ; 1 sentatives ot. those firms who were unfori ix.nate • enough to be , appointed, repre- [' sent(itives.pf. the'whole .of the employers in-the.:Auckland district at the recent conference. The Auckland union is thus ; apnlying a -process of .victimisation so i much decried by trades unions throughout the country. Further, the Auckland Union has also adopted "Wellington's 'goslow'" p'olicy. -The position,'therefore, is ' 'that"while the employers.are endeavqiir•ing to have the dispute settled by constitutional methods, the unions ' prefer different tactics. The employers believe that. the public will support them'in the line of action' they- have taken'." ; POSITION IN AUCKLAND BRIGHTER i' % Sy Telegraph—Press Association. , ! Auckland, February 7. - The position in regard to the drivers' dispute is-brighter.'to-day. It is under, stood that the men and the employers are cbnferring" to-morrow morning, and a more conciliatory tone seems notice-' able. . The. boycott system, proposed .by the men apparently was_ iot meant to foe absolute, the-, idea being th&t no pb! jectioii should be made to driving- goods for- the firm's .concerned, but that no aid should be given either in loading or loading. No word has yet been received that the advisory : board of; the Transport Workers- Federation .has,, confirmed the proposed boycott. •
