TRAMWAY TO ROSENEATH

INCLINED LIFT SYSTEM FAVOURED. Respecting an application from tho Oriental Bay and Roseneath Ratepayers Association for nn extension of the electric tramways system to Koseneath, the following report has been furnished by the City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton):"I have already spent <i considerable time in preparing a report showing a proposed new road into the Koseneath district via Hawker Street. lhe mat. ter has been before the council. The proposed work is, however, a very costly undertaking. Recently I have formed the opinion that the construction of hill roads with electric trams thereon should not be undertaken where inclined lifts on the 'cable , system might be satisfactorily adopted. .Any connection into Rose'noath should lmve os, its objective point the end of Grafton Road, where it joins the Crescent, and near the sjto of the fire brigade reel station. If a satisfactory route for a cable- tram or inclined lift can be obtained from Oriental Bay it would, in my opinion, be not only the cheapest in first cost, but also tho cheapest to work. Inclined tramwnys electrically operated and with cars balanced require power only sufficient for' raising the number of passengers in the ascending car over and above those, ip the car descending a gradient, it will, therefore, be seen that the power required is excedingly small as compared with the use of any system in which selfpropelled cars aro provided. The matter, however, is one which will_ require some considerable investigation m order to determine the possibility of gettvns: a suitable-route for such an inclined lift. , The committee report, in which the engineer's report wus embodied, wai adopted.
