TARANAKI MEETING
CUP AVON BY AFTERGLOW. ' (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.) New Plymouth, February 5. Glorious weather prevailed for tho opening of the Taranaki meeting. Thero was a big ntteudanco and good racing, but the events got behind time and Hit last race was not run until after-six o'clock. Tho totalisator registered £%Ml 10s., against J125,705 on tho opening day last year.'
Gunwale was tho only scratching for tho Hack Hurdles. Golden Grafton was a good favourite. Bona Dea, played up at tho barrier and got rid of her rider. Thero was "ft false: start; and Speedwell Mac, Zela, and Master Webster covered a circuit beforo.beiug pulled up. In the race proper, White-Stockings led for six furlongs from tho three top weights. Down the back ilnster. Webster. .toot charge, but at the' half-mile the favourite arid Paraoa, ran to the lead. Over tho last two hurdles the favourite jumped badly, and at tho bottom of the straight Tutchen was uneasy on her. Paraoa continued strongly and beat the favourite by a neck. Poltbogue, who had been handy all through, was third and Master AA r ebster was, next.
All started, but Arch Salute, in the Juvenilo Handicap. Silver Link was an odds on favourite, and jumping out in front she .led the whole way. Restful and Cherry- Mart were always handy, but sould make no impression on the favourite, who-won easily. Passing Through finished .well and got second place from Cherry Mart, who beat Bestful by a ■head. The winner scored decisively and is clearly a .much better filly than was generally reckoned. ■ • • ~
Philomela, was the big fancy -for the Timaru Hack Handicap, and she. won without effort. Metallunt and Nemalino filled the places. Metallum played up at the barrier and was started from be-, hind the field; She .took-charge and-led Into the straight, where the favourite came through, and won.-Her win was a distinct improvement on her Pahiatua form,-. r ■ '■ ' '.' Dingle was favourite-in a good, betting race for the Cup. E. Johnson withdrew Bewi Poto and Henry Clay on the course,- and Bingham also, was scratched. At the start Ladogeur and Fire Cloud dwelt and lost a lot of ground. Racing up'the straight the-first time^,Form-Up' led Afterglow, with,-the favourite bring-, ing up the r rear. The positions were unchanged, down the back, except ■• that' Ladogetm' moved up... Entering," the straight Form .Up was. still in 1 .charge)', but Afterglow.had his measure,, and from' that out her rider, was engaged'.in. withstanding, a..late effort..by Ladogeur.'- A good finish resulted in ',i,.win .for the. light-weight by,ahead. Depredation was two lengths away, third,- and then' camo Form Up- and' Dingle;'' with iFiro''Cloud tailed off. : The winner would have paid a much sliorter price had she hot been' ' ridden'by ."an apprentice. ■-' The open weltlr Tesiilted'ih nn easy win ' for the" Wellington-owned Loyal Arch,' who was in charge from the barrier'rise.Gipsy Gem went 'with heritor half a mile, but Deeley then sent' the - ina're ; ahead, and she'was well clear across' the bottom. In the straight she' was challenged by Kilt'ess, but. "the leader JiehF , ber own, and won easily. •" Alteration ■ finished-fast iri third place after appear ing to be-hampered by the turns.' Mar-' queteur' was running : third fo'rinbst of tho journey, but he was riot going generously at any stage,- and' finished wellback. ' f'-. : ..' .:.". v..- •
The Flying Handicap was productive of one of the finest finishes ever seen'on the' New Plymouth course.' .It was a"Rood betting race, 80-Beep, Croesus, andlhah all being evenly backed. Madam Rjstbri led for a furlong, whenlnah'taolc charge;' but was soon '-joined by : Cr«-sns, and the pair led into "tho-stnvight,'iust : ciear of Royal Chef andßo-Peep,..who had been In trouble. -Inah fell- back, but Croesus kept his position, and was challenged by Royal Chef. At tho distance Bc-Peeit got clear,' and in a great race to "the post they crossed the "line together ■■' The jndgre awarded the verdiot to'' the topweight by a head, while Royal Chef beat 80-Peep by' a nose. ■'Inah was. close up fourth. The" winner,, who is very consistent when tho class ,'is at all weak,,'got a good reception'oil returning t0... weigh in. After the race an inquiry, was-held into some interference that-occurred to Madam Ristori. H. Gray, riderof BoPeep, was held to be responsible, and is to be cautioned. ■ -.. *
All but Guianafonn went out for the Okato Hack Handicap. First' Salute was a good favourite, and after the form of Afterglow in the Cup tho rate looked good for him'. ■ Tiranga led' into . the straight, but the favourite then ranged pp, and won nicely!' Eobur i'ust failed to catch Tiranga. Trombone .was.fourth. H. Telford withdrew. Pulicaiu favour of Cotillion, in the Scurry, and. the filly started" n better.favourite than Hallow. Reopai held fthe lead into the straight, where Hallow took charge, and won pulling up from Halycon,. who.jngt beat Cotillion. Arch Salute and Some Boy were the next to finish: The winner has disappointed on several occasions previously, but there was no doubt about the manner of.his win't<nday. ~< DETAILS OF THE. RACING.
