"WHEN I WAS AT THE BAR"

A EEBUKE FEOM THE BENCH. When the retrial of Thomas Albrccht on a charge of manslaughter was about to be called in the Sjuprenie Court yesterday morning, Mr. Macu.'sey stated that Mr. H. I'. O'Leary, counsel for accused, was not present. .Mr. O'Leary evidently thought that the case set down for hearing at 10 o'clock would take a little while, and was engaged elsewhere. Mr. Justice Edwards: When I was practising at the bar, Mr. Macassey, we were not allowed to think, we had to wait. Wo were just as busy then, at least I was. ' v

A few minutes" later Mr. O'Leary, who had been called up by telephone, put in an appearance, looking somewhat hot. Addressing His Honour, Mr. O'Leary said: "I have to apologise for keeping the Court waiting. Perhaps I had no right to do ko, but I thought the O'Brien case would take a quarter of an hour or so. and was engaged in another place." His Honour: The same old excuse, Mr. O'Leary. When I was at the Bar we were not allowed to think—we had to wait. Many a weary hour have I waited in this court.

Mr. O'Leary: In rushing about, Tour Honour, I have unfortunately lost niy brief.. I think I know enough, of the case, however, from the previous trial, to be able to conduct the defence.
