PERSONAL ITEMS

Sir John Salmond, K.C., Solicitor-Gen-eral, has returned from a holiday trip to the south. ' .

Dr Gibbs, Willis Street, left for the. south last evening. He expects to be uway about a fortnight. Mr H. Bolton, of the Technical Education Board staff, has been appointed acting-director of the college, in the place of Mr. W. S. La Trobe, who has accepted the position of Superintendent of Tochnieal Education. Mr. Bolton is not an applicant for the position of director.

Mr. John O'Mally, aged 103, died at the Masterton Hospital last night (states our special correspondent). Hβ was Born in County Kerry, and arrived here in a sailing ship in 1863. Hβ was m apparently good health till a few days ago. He attributed his great age to hard work and nc worry.

Referring to the resignation of Dr. Wilson, Bishop of Melanesia, the Wellington "Church Chronicle" for February savs-.—"The abrupt paragraph which appeared in the daily Press to the effect that the resignation followed on a vote of the conference, was. unauthorised, and was immediately contradicted by the Primate. Up to this time of writing we have heard very little that is certain. We gather from rather vague allusions in private letters that, the Bishop announced his resignation at the beginning of the conference, and that the- clergy and workers had for some time anticipated it. Until official news is received no more can be said; but there , are good grounds for fearing that the Bishop's health has been deteriorating under the attacks of malarial fever from which he was suffering when ho last visited us. It comes ns a. great blow to the mission that so faithful and strenuous a leader should be thus compelled to withdraw. We can only pray, and ask all those who love the mission to pray, that the work ■may be wisely carried on through the transition, and that God may raise up a worthy successor to carry on the anxious , task '6f leadership." ,
