HECTOR MEMORIAL AWARD. By Telegraph-Press Association. . Christchurch, February. 3. At to-day's meeting of the Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute the Hector ANvard Committee reported that it had been decided to award the Hector Memorial and Prize for 1919 to Dr. P. W. Robertson, M.A., Ii.S.C, late uf Victoria University' College (son of Mr. Donald -Robertson, Civil Service Commissioner), for his chemical researches, particularly as regards organic, analytical, physical, and technological chemistry. Two other New Zealand candidates had also come closely to the winner.
The- report was adopted. On Dr. Chilton's motion it was decided that the official abbreviation of the title, to denote fellowship should be F.N.Z. Hst.
It was decided to ask the Government to appoint the institute an advisory Body in connection with the administration of ICapiti Island. The institute ,resolved to approach the Government to more strictly enforce the regulations regarding the protection of native,birds and seals. ■
Dr. Mellor, of Dunedin, was elected an honorary member of the institute. Dr. Mellor's work in connection with refractory, material was highly praised, it'being stated that it had been a big factor in connection with the winning of the wat. , . , , It, was agreed to make it a recommendation to the. authors of the papers that in the matter of weights and measures they adhere as strictly as possible to the metric system. Officers were elected as follow.:—President, Dr. Cockayne; lion, editor,-Dr. C. A. Cotton; hon. treasurer, Mr. C. A. Ewen; hon. librarian, Dr. Thomson; hon. secretary, Mr. R. C. Aston. - ' The fixing of of the next annual meeting was left to the Standing Committee.
