"THE CORNER SHOP"
. —, « . BROCHUKE BY JIR. CHARLES WILSON. ' As there is no book published-.which eives...an at all-comprehensive idea of Wellington' citv from all aspects; the brochure on Wellington by, Mr.- Charles Wilson (published by Whitcombe'; nnd Tombs) has a value all- its ow?., particu-' - larly to-the'itinerant visitor to the'Em-pire-City who wishes to r iidvis6 his friends abroad as to the general characteristics' of. .tho place. The- brochure mate 'no pretence to.be exhaustive.'-'lt is' just a bright, crisp "little description of ' the "windy city of the strait," in which the writer: "neither extenuates no sets . down ou?lit; in malice." It does not savour in tho -Ip.ast degree of "boost," as is the manner of many of such publications,' but in'plain cryptic phrases gives a very truthful and accurate view of what Mr. Wilson happily torms ''the' corner shop" —the place where everyone must call'at timo or other- if. they-wish•• .to.' do business in New Zenlahd, and who, in-' oidentally, may gamble upon being vitalised by the 'experience.' The writer dwells on the invigorating climate,- and does not ; shirk Ms responsibilities' respecting our weather..- He refers to our cosmopolitanism as distinct from the Bumbledom of other cities of equal 'size; hinting-'that the combination of these' co.ii'litions'is reflected in the'character of the community. ■'■ A" brief history of thofour.dation'of AVellington is included, there is information about our harbour," and ttiei informative l.;tterpress gains by the inclusion, of several-plates reflecting ancient and modern Wellington' photographically. . ■!' •'• ,'i ' ' - ;
