Tho collier Canopus, which Is held up at Lyttelton, was still short of firemen on Friday. If is uudei-stod (says tho "Sun") that the men aro not satisfied with tho oxisting method of bunkering tho vessel. Their contention is that the bunkers Bhould be replenished if necessary at each port, instead of making tho supply taken in at Westport suffice for a round trip, say, to Lyttelton, Tnuaru, and back to. the West Coast. They mam-, tain that when the supply begins to dwindlo a lot of extra labour is involved in gettinp the coal from tho farther end of the bunkers forward to tin- (nt-s. Tho argument pf the owners, it is stated, is thai the method now employed has been 1 in operation for nuito a number of years without any objection hitherto having, been raised. Moreover, thoy assert that 1 the firemen's request, if carried into affect,
would often entail a needless oarrying of coal, as the bunkers would never bo empty. . THE WILTSHIRE. ,At 9.5 a.m. on Saturday the F. and S. transport Wiltshire berthed p,t the King's Wharf. The Wiltshire, which left Suez on December 2/, and called at Colombo and Melbourne, had a'good trip, with lino weather. Her movouienta from Wellington have not been decided, but the vessel will, in any case, remain in port for a day or two. ■-■> •' , • With ample deck apace, the Wiltshire has the appearance of being a most suitable ship for trooping, which she has bran doing .continuously -since the outbreak of war. The;work has kept her running between Australia, England, Gallipoli. and Egypt. In Suvla Bay, at tho timo of the memorable landing; she was under fire from the Turkish land bah teries, and has scars to show for that. On a very lively day she was hiflbree times. One shell went into the- dining saloon, and tho two others struck' the higher decks. There were in all casos no- casualties. Beyond this, the Wiltr shins did not come in for any ectoitine experiences, and had no encounters with ; submarines or mineß.' i TAHITI. SAILS TO-DAY. 1 : Tho heavv- Tain on Saturday stopped I vrbrk'os the Tahiti, when'only a little •more oargo had to 'bo taken in. THE BRITON. "". The WeUington office of the S.S.. and A. Company announces that the UnionOastlo Line's Briton was expected to leave, Lyttelton on Saturday for Bluff, her sold; reading port.' According to schedule 'the vessel should sail-from there on? Friday for London, via Sydney and South. Africa, THE RONA.IN PORT." The Scales Liner barque Rona sailed'into port late on Saturday night from San Francisco. Tho vessel will probably berth to-day MANAROA TO TOW THE GERTIE >; A' very smart passago was made byMessrs. Miller Bros.'s steamer Manar'oa, which arrived at Wellington at 1 a.m. ' yesterday from Thames. ■■ ■■ After loading machinery to be installed- in the /converted dredge Progress at Dunedin, she, left Thames on Thursday afternoon, and . reached here in under 60 hours. Tho Manaroa is to receive stipmlies pf coal and water, and is to tow the coal hulk Gertie to Dunedin, where she will also be refitted as a • steamer. > . The transport Oxfordshire, with troops from Liverpool, via Colombo, reached Auckland early yesterday morning. She will probably load in New Zealand. Tho agents are the New Zealand Sbipping.'Co. The next Bailing of a Union Company's passenger steamer from 'Wellington to Sydney will bo on Thursday, February 13: Colliers which Bhould be in port to-day are:—Kowhai and ' Karamu, from Weßtport. and Ngakuta from Oroymouth. Tho To A''au arrived in port' yesterday ; . from Auckland, via. Lyttelton. She .is. to sail to-morrow for Auckland, via.Pic-, ton. . . . ' „ After her overhaul rho' 'Koinata is to sail to-morrow for Wcstoort. Wednesday 'will be a general holiday on the wharves- throughout New Zealand, to . allow. tho workers to hold • their annual ipicnics. Consequently the Mararoa and Nikau, sailing to-morrow, and .the ,Maori and JJa.pourika, on Wednesday, will receive no cargo'. The American steamer Arinetto v Rolph left Wellington on Saturday afternoon for Sydney. From- there her movements aro ; indefinite, but she will rctiirn to a Pacific Coast port. .-..■• , Mr. John Jeromsom jon of Mr. : J. R.
