FAILING TO KEEP PROPER BOOKS
* ♦: . C-AENET HOLMES SENT TO GAOL. The hearing of (he charge, against Garnet B. Holmes, who was declared a bankrupt in March last year, of failing to keep proper books and accounts as required by the law, was concluded on Saturday morning, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. Mr. James ■' Macintosh accountant, said that Holmes had recorded his transactions iu a book of first entry, though they were not properly classified. Mr. Macintosh added that he would be ablo to make up a statement with very slight assistance from Holmes, but it would take him about four weeks to do so, The Magistrate, after quoting the decisions given by various Judges, said that the question of intent did not enter in the matter, nor did the fact that Holmes had engaged various bookkeepers, he was responsible for keeping proper books. He must, therefore, convict the defendant. Holmes was sentenced to one month's imprisonment without hard labour.
