MILITARY MUDDLE ALLEGED
UNLOADING OF TROOPSHIP BRITON By Telegraph-Press Association 'Christchurch, January 30. A serious hitch occurred in connection with the disembarkation of the soldiers on board the transport Briton yesterday owing to the discovery of a shortage of something like MOD in equipment. A court of inquiry was set«up, aud it was later announced by Lieutenant-Colonel Holderness, officer in charge of troops, that no men would be allowed to land until the equipment was replaced. The prohibition against, landing was subsequently rescinded, bill resulted in a considerable muddle nnd delay. Colonel Chail'py, othYur commanding Canterbury district, disclaimed, on behalf of hii? .stall', nil responsibility for the contretemps, which he alleged was duo fo orders issued to the officer commanding troops on board not being carried out. He pointed' out that the deficiency in kit coii'id have been ascertained weeks ago. The value of the missing kit would not compensate for tho cost to the Defence Department through the delay in disembarking.
