A WELTER OF MILLIONS
FOE NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE. The latest return (dated January 25), issued by the Department of Imperial Government Supplies gives information as to the exact quantity of frozen meat, wool, oheeee, butter, scheelite, hides, and sheepskins which the Imperial Government has bought and paid, for in New Zealand. The Imperial Government's operations respecting meat commenced on March 3, 1915, since wijich date the sum of has been paid out for 8,107,055 carcasses of mutton, 9,353,653 carcasses of lamb, and 2,355,979 quarters of beef. The meat in store on January 15, for which no space has been allocated in steamers, consisted of 4,297,737 carcasses. The ' cheese operations commenced on November i, since when ; a sum of ,£11,253,677 has been paid out by the British Government to Dominion producers. The butter operations did not commence until iSfovwnber 20, 1917 (fourteen months ago), since- when producers have been paid a total of Wool was commandeered as from- December 1, 1916. Up to January 25 .£29,523,419 was paid for 1,222,365 bales. On top of that freezing companies elipe wool was purchased to tho total of .£3,308,575. • Sheepskins purchased eince February 5, 1917, cost the Imperial Government J51,482,507, and hide 3 (since March 19, 1917) realised X 718.802. Scheelite brought its producers in New Zealand the sum of .£129,273, and "other business" (not stipulated) brought in another £1,525,236.' Altogether the Imperial Government's purchases to date have meant an« expenditure on New Zealand products of .£83,360,218.
