HAIU3OTJR BOAItD'S MCH. ■ At the meeting of the Harhour Board last evening Mr. tt. A. Wright, M.l'., moved , in accordance with notice:—(l) That the Harbour Board, while assisl>ing generally in the forthcoming peace celebrations, in Wellington. autliGrises the oxecutive to erect a suitable arch worthy of the great occasion, at a cost not exceeding £350.' $) That tho Government be asked to pass the necessary legislation validating any expenditure incurred by. the board in this connection. . ■
Mr. Wright, in moving the motion, &aid that the Wellington City Council, together'with », committee which had been formed, would endeavour to interest business 'people/to build arches oft the route of the procession, which would be out ot tho features of the peace celebrations, and he thought it ■would not ho. out of place for tile Harbour help, the city in, this matter. Never again, perhaps not in the history of the world, would the British people bo called upon to celebrate peace after such a'war. It was no v doubt a hard thing to prevent war, Imtyetyifc might be that the Peace Conforo'nee/now sitting would evolve a scheme that would prevent war. The celebration to take place here would, he believed, he worthy of tho'ocrasioni ii-'id lie thought that the Wellington Harbour Board would bo justified in spundiiM money as snre^stnd. The chairman. srcomlnd the motion, and said tint the amount proposed wap .very moderate, for on flic occasion of the visit of the Duke of York the board spput over £600. Both'.motions wern carried.
