SOLDIERS ON THE LAND
SOME PROTESTS.. By Teleeraiili.—>'roi<» ■ isaociatioii. Hawera, "January 22. ■ A meeting of the Returned Soldier* , 'Association last night passed a motion against the regulations in "connection .with the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Act. It was considered that the Act as passed by Parliament satisfactory, and that the officials were willing to do the liesfr for tho men, but the regulations which hud •ikeeu added ; hindered efficient administration. The ground*,of lho soldiers' complaint lire: Firstly, that with re--1 gard to advances ou mortgage to assist ! returned soldiers the present applica- ' tion form requires a three, Ition by the'owner to the applicant. Consequently it is only in exceptional cases that an intending buyer and seller can afford to wait. Secondly, with- regard to advances under tho bii! of sale security must be given, not only for stock and chattels on farm, in ;respect of which money is required," but also over all other stock and ciiattels,:present and future, of the applicant. Thirdly, that nil applicants must at their own expense appear ' personally ilefore tho board, entailing: long distances of travel and days oT -lost time, only with the-prospect unl not an; assurance of'success:- . Fourthly, that the' Land Board meets only jnpnthly, and applications- missing ahe■' ■ current month's meeting aredeferred a : month. I'ifthly, all applications'.rnquiro. the Minister of Lauds' approval; weaning further delay, especially to those living far from tho centres. The meeting considered the conditions . -altogether unnecessaryj'i.nnd thought;, that loeiil •■hoards.'consisting. of;..cbnimerc'ial. and farming mpn/could be establisied in all smaller centres cmtf overcome the present waste of time.
