HEALTH OF THE CITY
DUTY OF THE COUNCIL. The health of the oity will have to be in future the concern of tho City Council, and it is probable that soon after the resumption after the vacation the council will bo asked to consider proposals for this purpose. The Mayor on Saturday expressed tho oprnion that the council would hayo to take over full control, and appoint a medical man as health officer under tho council. This ho considered was absolutely necessary to meet the growing rjeeds of the city. Now that more labour was to be obtained,' tbo council would have to extend the sanitation services. All this would cost money, but in the opinion of tho Mayor nothing should stand in the way of the cleansing of the city, and more supervision of the surroundings, ■ and even the interiors of homes and of buildings where people congregate. These powers the council has under the Act passed in such a hurry at tha end of last session. Whatever is done under this head will be quite apart from any enterprise the council may embark upon for the rebuilding of certain portion* of the city, or for, the relief of the housing problem In other ways. It was not proved that the recent epidemic was aggravated by uncleanness in the city, .but the workers in the fight with the disease maintained that the worst of the cases came from overcrowded or . airless houses and tenements.
