COST OF EPIDEMIC

SLUMP, IN TRAM RETURNS. The epidemic in Wellington had a startling and altogether disastrous etfect on the tramway revenue for the weeks during whichjho sickness was at its worst.

Attention was drawn to the figures yesterday by the Mayor. Ho said that for the four weeks, ending December 8 there had been a debit balance of £4397, as against a credit balance of £1172 for' the correspondiug yjaeks of last year. The revenue per' car milo_ shrank from 17.70 d. to 16.26 d. within the' period, and the working expenses increased from 12.59 d. to 17.33 d. The percentage of working expenses to revenue per car mile jumped from 71 per cent, to 106 per cent. The rea.son for all this was that for several days the cars ceased running altogether and for a longer time there was a very limited s.ervice. While wages and salaries were running on all the time the earning power of the cars was reduced. The number of passengers carried during the period was .1,541,246, as compared with 2,603,246 for the corresponding period of last year.
