The Hon. D. H. Guthrie returned to Wellington yesterday. ■ The Hon. T. M. Wilford is at present in Marlborough, having motored through to that district by the east coast route from Christchurch. He will be returning to Wellington in a day or two. The Chief Justice (Sir Bobert Stout) left for Auckland-yesterday on business connected with tho Prisons Board. Mr. Justice Hosking left Wellington yesterday for Napier, whore ho will preside 'over tlie adjourned sittings or the Supreme Court. Base Records Office has received cable advice that the Distinguished Scrvieo Order has been awarded to Major teoifrey Armstrong Buddie. Mr Albert Johnson, late stationmaster at Greytown, .'eft on Saturday morning to take up a position at Upper Mutt. - Mr. Johnson was presented by the, citizens with a. fountam-pen and a cheque. At a iccent meeting of the House Committee of the local Returned .Soldiers' Club, the resignation or the manager (Mr. John I. Fox) was accepted with regret, and references were made to the splendid services which he had rendered to. returning soldiers. Mr. Fox, who joined the British section of the N.Z.E.F. in England in 1914, returned to New Zealand early in 1016. In a email room on Lanibton Quay Mr. Fox, together with a few others, set out to organise a club, and he well remembers selecting a pattern for a badge which he never dreamt would' be worn already by about 15.000 men. The start was made without funds, but iu spito of difficulties the club prospered. In connection with his resignation from tho management of the club, Mr. Fox eaid that at a timo when his thoughts wero focused on Europe he looked hack with some satisfaction on the days oone by. To have met over 10,000 men in'a space of three years, studied their outlook and their requirements, and helped them accordingly, was_a privilege only given to a few men., Mr. Fox expects to leave New Zealand for England on business at the end of February. ,'' : .
It is probable, says the Christchurch "Sun" that Colonel C. M. Gibbon, C.M.G., Chief cf the General Staff, when he returns to England, will be plscpd. at his own request, on the Retired List, and'will engage in farming his property in Ireland.
Mr. J. M'Laren, of Christchurch, has received news that hi? son, Mi - . .7. Ewan M'Larerj. who was trailed at tho Canterbury Aviation Company's school, and joined'the Royal Flying Corps, luid been recommended for a lieutenancy, and; before the armistice was signed, had arranged for a flight from England to France. While in training in Englnnd he took part in Rugby football, and was appointed captain of the Oxford University first fifteen.
Mr, H. E. Pacey, of Auckland, who has been general mauager of the New Zealand Dairy Association for the past four years, has resigned from his position. He is acquiring.an interest in another business, his main reason for doing so being medical'advice that he must have change arid less arduous occupation. Mr. Pacey's resignation tvill not take effect for some months.
Mr. W. L. Simpson, manager of the Trustees, Executors and >Agencj' Company, Dunedin, has retired from the position, and is being succeeded .temporarily by Mr. E. E. Clowes, necountant to the company. 'Mr. Simpson arrived' at Port Chalmers in IS6S, and shortly.afterwards entered tho Government service as clerk on tho Otago goldfields. He was subsequently appointed warden and magistrate, serving in these capacities in various parts of tEe province for 16 years, after which he became resident magistrate in Dunedin. He retired in 1882 to take up his position with the Trustees, Executors, and Agency Company.
Mr. F. Hutton, of the Wellington Magistrate's Court staff, who lias been fccuperatiug in Auckland after recovering from a severe attack of influenza., has returned to Wellington, and will resume duty to-day.
News has been received by Mrs. S. Griffiths, 28 Newton Road, Auckland, that her second son, Corporal John H. Griffiths., has been awarded r ,the Distinguished Conduct Medal. He- left with the./ Twenty-second Beinforcemwits, and is now recovering from influenza in a' convalescent camp in France.
Corporal Henry Samuel Beale, third , son of Mrs. H. Beale, Newton Road, - Auckland, has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medai. Corooral Boale left with the Fourteenth Reiv> forcoments, an 5 has been bounded three times. He is at present in Brockenhurst Hospital. ' 1
