BIPLANE AND DESERT GOLD

THE PROPOSED MEETING. (By "Eocnele.") According to. a message published last Week, sporting writers in, Australia have once again -.started an , agitation for a meeting between Biplane and Desert Gold, audi though matters are at present ob.acurc there seems to be some reason to believe that tlio meeting may, on this occasion, come .to something more than talk. • Aa announced recently, Mr. G. I). Greenwood has sold Biplane to Mr. T. A. Stirton, owner of the champion Australian miler, Cetigne. Mr. Stirton, it may practically be taken for granted, will sanction the meeting of his horse with the New Zealand mare, providing, of course, Biplane can be landed at the post oil the day fit enough to undergo such a test. The best race suited for the teßt (should it .• como ofT) would no doubt b» the ■ Essendon Stakes, run at Flemiugton over ten furlongs, but there ars several events run over either two furlongs shorter or longer, as the ownors mjiy desire, to be decided at the Y.K.C. and A.J.C. autumn , fixtures.' Should the . ten-furiong race be the ono decided on. for the teßt, and the race run at wcight-for-age conditions. Desert Gold would have an advantage of one 'p'ouod in the weights, sho carrying Bst. lllb. as against 9st. to bo carried 'by Biplane. Desert' Gold is at present at P.andwiclc, and IHplano is at Biccarton. The V.R.C. Jfoeting is to be held early in March, and if. the match is to come off Mr. Stivton's horse, should be shipped across at the first available opportunity. It is interesting to compare the performances of Desert Gold and Biplane, tlie former being a Bix-year-old-and the latter a fonr-year-old. tjp to - date they read as under:— '■■■.' Biplane. Knees. • Firsts. Seconds. Thirds. 17. 10 4 - — Desert Gold. 50 34 10 4 ■ i- Stakes Won. Biplano .Deßert" Gold £22.134 < It is to be hoped that the race will come off, as it would, once {ind for all. decide a topic which haß been debated all over Australasia sinco April of last year.
