DEATH OF COLONEL G. W. S PATTERSON

FOUND. DEAD IN BED. By Telegraph—Press Association ~ , , „ ... Auckland, January 1. Colonel G. Vi. S. Patterson, officer commanding tho Auckland Military District, was found dead in bed this morning. Deceased, who was aged '56, had been connected with military affairs in Auckland for thirty years, and was formerly in command of the Auckland Garrison Artillery, and later Coast Defence commander. On the outbreak of war he took charge of the mobilisation of tho Const Defences, and continued in commnnd until Colonel Hume was appointed to command the Wellington District three years ago, when he succeeded him m the command at Auckland. Colonel Patterson was head of the firm of G. W. S. Patterson and Co., kauri sum merchants, Auckland, and New York, and was,recognised as an authority on the East, particularly China, Japan, and Siberia, to which countries hti paid many business visits. During tho war he acted 011 several occasions as Governor of Samoa, relieving Colonel Logan when the latter was obliged to visit New Zealand. Colonel Patterson was an Irishman. Possessed of- a. particularly plea, eant .native personality the decea6*ed was' always popular wherever he went, and his death will be sincerely mourned by all who -knew him.
